OVERVIEW
The Gambia is a low, narrow strip of country that stretches inland from the beautiful West African coast, along the bank of the majestic River Gambia. It may be the smallest country in Africa, located between north and south Senegal, but it is fast becoming a favourite alternative for the British instead of the crowded resorts of Europe.
Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, stands on the south side of the magnificent river estuary, a worthy commercial centre considered by tourists little more than the gateway to the hotels spread along the 25 miles (40km) of beautiful sandy coastline. The fascinating pristine beaches are not the only attractions for visitors but also the welcoming attitude of local people who offer their nature reserves, fine hotels, and craft markets.
Gambian people are mainly Muslim and their official language is English. The country has hot, rainy summers and cold, dry winters. The country's currency is the Dalasi.
Some tips to take into account when visiting The Gambia: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 230 Volts and the country code is 220.
