OVERVIEW
Lying on the west coast of Africa, Cameroon is bordered by the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. To the northwest of the country, volcanic peaks covered by bamboo forest rise to over 2000m, waterfalls and villages are scattered over the lower slopes.
The capital, Yaounde, stands on seven hills. Visitors can find several modern hotels and many markets, shops and cinemas there.
Douala, Cameroon's economic capital, is 24km from the sea and dominated by Mount Cameroon, West Africa's highest mountain. Visitors cannot miss the cathedral, the Artisanat National (a craft and souvenir market) and Wouri Bridge. The Kalamaloue Reserve, in northern Cameroon, is small but offers plentiful opportunities for viewing antelope, monkey and warthog.
Cameroonian people are mainly Christian and their official languages are French and English. Nobember to February are the cooler, drier months. Some of the ingredients used in Cameroonian specialties include avocado pears, pineapples and mangoes. Cameroon's currency is the CFA Franc .
