OVERVIEW
Namur is the capital of Namur province as well as the political capital of Wallonia (the French-speaking Southern part of Belgium). It is located at the confluence of two major waterways, thus having a military significance from Roman times through the second World War.
One of the most spectacular buildings in Namur is St. Alban's Cathedral. (Cathedrale Saint Aubin). With an Italian influence, it was built between 1751 and 1767.
The Meat Hall, which is located on the banks of the Sambre, is one of the most important archeological museums of Wallonia. Built between 1588 and 1590, it is made from brick and blue stones. The old St. James tower built in 1385 is Namurs' only belfry tower. It was used during its time as a lookout for the city.
The greatest monument of Namur is the Citadel, which served as a strategic bastion in times of battles. Today visitors can access by road or cable-car and it is open daily.
