Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It comprises five main islands - Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Irian Jaya - as well as some 30 smaller archipelagoes. The total number of islands reaches 13,667, of which about 6,000 are inhabited. Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world.

Among special purchases are batik cloth, woodcarvings and sculpture, silverwork, woven baskets and hats, bamboo articles, krises (small daggers), paintings and woven cloth.
Indonesian people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Indonesian. The country has a tropical climate. Local specialties include rijstafel (a Dutch concoction consisting of a variety of meats, fish, vegetables and curries), sate (chunks of beef, fish, pork, chicken or lamb cooked on hot coals and dipped in peanut sauce). The country's currency is the Indonesian Rupiah.
