OVERVIEW
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It comprises five main islands - Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Irian Jaya - as well as some 30 smaller archipelagoes. The total number of islands reaches 13,667, of which about 6,000 are inhabited. Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world.
Indonesia is a major producer and exporter of coffee and tea, sold on almost every street corner. Bali is famous for its delicious rice wine called brem while Tana Toraja (southern Sulawesi) prodcues Tuak, a famously potent local brew. Also worth tasting is the tocal pilsner beer.
Among special purchases are batik cloth, woodcarvings and sculpture, silverwork, woven baskets and hats, bamboo articles, krises (small daggers), paintings and woven cloth.
Indonesian people are mainly Muslim and their official language is Indonesian. The country has a tropical climate. Local specialties include rijstafel (a Dutch concoction consisting of a variety of meats, fish, vegetables and curries), sate (chunks of beef, fish, pork, chicken or lamb cooked on hot coals and dipped in peanut sauce). The country's currency is the Indonesian Rupiah.
Some tips to take into account when visiting Indonesia: the electricity runs on 1270/130 Volts and the country code is 62.
