OVERVIEW
Situated along the Adriatic coast, Croatia is a country of small villages in the interior and an impressive Dalmatian coastline. The main coastal resorts (Porec, Pula, Opatija and Rovinj) are situated on the Istria peninsula whereas the Kvarner region abounds in islands and islets with good beaches. The Split and Makarska regions are located further south. Split was founded in the 4th century AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The large palace he built and the walled town now form part of the old quarter. Today, this palace hosts concerts, opera and dance. Zagreb, on the River Sava, is the economic, cultural and administrative heart of the region. Some other important cities are Rijeka and Osijek.
Croatian people are mainly Roman Catholic and their official language is Croatian. The country has dry summers and mild winters along the coast. The country's currency is the Kuna. Local dishes include cold yoghurt soup with cucumbers and peppers or aubergines stuffed with meat.
Some tips to take into account when visiting the country: US driving permits are accepted, the electricity runs on 220 Volts and the country code is 385.
